sketches 2009

Ink and watercolour. All digital. I drew it for my daughter because she wanted to try “drawing like daddy” on the computer. I printed a black and white version for her to colour with markers. She enjoyed it. It’s not nearly as cool as the strange drawings she came up with while trying to use my WACOM tablet for the first time.

From the Shelf Elf banner: this is the creature. Ink, Photoshop and Painter.

Like the title of this blog entry: it’s another picture of a fox. I found it on my hard drive and realized that I’ve never used it before. No time like the present, I say!

I like this one more than I probably should. One of those rare drawings where the background just “happened”. I was despairing of it coming together, it didn’t look good for a while there. Then suddenly it came right. I love it when that happens.

I brought my watercolours on tour with me. I’ve not done as many paintings as I’d hoped, but I painted this in my sketchbook while testing my colours. Perhaps I’ll post one or two of my other paintings too as well.

I drew this monster in Seattle while presenting to a group of grade seven and eight students at St. Matthew’s School. It’s funny, I’ve been drawing a similar monster for a while but never as a “completed” illustration. The students all loved it and I do too. So for your viewing pleasure, here’s a monster (with blood-shot eyes to make him look spookier). I’d like to take a moment to say thanks to all the students at St. Matthew’s School for making me feel so welcome and for helping make such a great presentation. It was my last event on the tour and a great way to finish-up. Like putting a big exclamation point on the end of the tour.

A second sketch uploaded within a week?!!?!??? What’s wrong with me!!! I thought of saving it and building up a little library of images so I can update more regularly when I haven’t got anything new to post. Then I thought, “Nah, I like this picture so I’ll post it now.” Perhaps it’ll encourage me to post more images more frequently. That would be nice! I can dream.
Painted entirely in Photoshop (except the bunny, who was drawn on paper and coloured in Photoshop). I like how it turned out and opens up some possibilites for future digital colouring and painting.

Panda’s garden has grown a bit since the last time we saw him.

May 13, 2009
This isn’t the most recent drawing by a long shot but I found it on my hard drive in a folder with other presentation sketches. These are drawings that I’ve done while talking to children in schools or libraries. I like this one.

The kids at Westcreek Public School asked if I could post this image for them. So… here it is. I touched it up a little, but not much. I hope you still like it! Thanks for hosting me for a morning. I had a great time. I hope you did too.

A digital drawing to start the day.

Happy Friday!

Happy Wednesday.

Happy Thursday to all of you. This is a character from a possible upcoming project. Possibly. Maybe.

A pirate! I drew this pirate on the back of an envelope containing a card for a friend of mine. I like pirates.

October 9, 2009
Inspired by my good friend Aaron Linton. I’ve always had a thing for robots.

I’ve been drawing some animals in my sketchbook lately. I’m not exactly sure what this thing is, but it’s kind of tigery. Perhaps even sabre-toothy. I’m including the original “un-cleaned-up” scan as well as the colored version. It’s not really a finished drawing, but it’s got a quality that I kind of like. That’s why I colored it and uploaded it here.

I love trees. They are probably my single favourite thing to draw. Why? They’re beautiful and wild. Perhaps more than any other object I draw inspiration from them. They live and breathe. They’re solid yet flexible. They can live for hundreds of years. They are nature’s art. I drew Panda watering it. He seems to be a recurring character on this blog. Dunno why. I like that he seems to take care of things. I fancy the tree being part of his garden.

I’m not completely happy with this piece. But I spent enough time on it that I’d rather post it, despite its flaws, than let it languish on my hard drive. Besides it might grow on me. What don’t I like about it? Well, basically the big problem with it is the composition: too “central”. What I do like about it is the richness of some of the painting. I like the foreground, flowers, foliage, etc… Perhaps you will enjoy it.
I was going to post a WIP to show the piece in its various stages of development, but since I don’t love it I’ll save the WIP for another day and another (better) piece. I’ve developed some interesting new techniques combining Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop though. And this piece was another experiment to get used to these techniques. Hopefully I’ll find a use for them in an upcoming book!
Robots: Ink and Corel Painter

I love this drawing of a dog with a briefcase. I like the implication that he’s carrying something dangerous.
I tried a few different things with him but I think I like him best on a plain white background. I like the photo quite a lot, but I’m not sure if it does much for the overall image. I’m including the original version as well, the one without the DANGER symbol.

Forest: Photograph and Adobe Photoshop

Another dog picture. The photo in the background is old, taken on a digital camera that was one its last legs. However it has a quality that I really enjoy — all those thin lines from the old image sensor as it was deteriorating. Neat.
