I kinda like this one in a quiet sort of a way.

I drew this guy reading and decided that it looked kind of like my son, Theo, who is only 9 months old. I think it’s the hair. Anyway, I thought it a funny picture so coloured it up and here it is.

I love this drawing. It was quick and spontaneous and captures something very real. My wife even stopped what she was doing when she looked over at my sketchbook and commented on it (she seldom does that). I’ve just finished reading The Graveyard Book
by Neil Gaiman. It’s really excellent. This drawing isn’t really meant to be Bod, or a scene from the book, but it’s definitely inspired by some of the emotions conjured by reading it.

Where did this blue flower come from?

Not exactly mind-blowing but hey, they can’t all be gems. Feels like a good one to start another year of sketches.

Another dog picture. The photo in the background is old, taken on a digital camera that was one its last legs. However it has a quality that I really enjoy — all those thin lines from the old image sensor as it was deteriorating. Neat.

I love this drawing of a dog with a briefcase. I like the implication that he’s carrying something dangerous.
I tried a few different things with him but I think I like him best on a plain white background. I like the photo quite a lot, but I’m not sure if it does much for the overall image. I’m including the original version as well, the one without the DANGER symbol.

I’m not completely happy with this piece. But I spent enough time on it that I’d rather post it, despite its flaws, than let it languish on my hard drive. Besides it might grow on me. What don’t I like about it? Well, basically the big problem with it is the composition: too “central”. What I do like about it is the richness of some of the painting. I like the foreground, flowers, foliage, etc… Perhaps you will enjoy it.
I was going to post a WIP to show the piece in its various stages of development, but since I don’t love it I’ll save the WIP for another day and another (better) piece. I’ve developed some interesting new techniques combining Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop though. And this piece was another experiment to get used to these techniques. Hopefully I’ll find a use for them in an upcoming book!

I love trees. They are probably my single favourite thing to draw. Why? They’re beautiful and wild. Perhaps more than any other object I draw inspiration from them. They live and breathe. They’re solid yet flexible. They can live for hundreds of years. They are nature’s art. I drew Panda watering it. He seems to be a recurring character on this blog. Dunno why. I like that he seems to take care of things. I fancy the tree being part of his garden.
